Doug Campbell – Freelance Copywriter

My first job?  Writer – Junior Assistant Writer – in the Royal Navy.  Life has brought me full-circle to where I am now – a professional copywriter.  In between there was an international career in IT development – in the UK, France, the Netherlands, Ireland, the USA and Australia – writing countless lines of computer code and hundreds of business and technical documents.

Why copywriting?

Copywriting applies writing, researching, planning, organisational, project management and ‘people’ skills developed over many years, in an interesting, productive and imaginative way – on an infinite variety of hugely enjoyable and challenging projects.

I studied my craft with the Australian School of Copywriting – because copywriting is not simply creative writing, although creativity remains a fundamental component.  Copywriting involves understanding and applying proven methods, principles and procedures to develop successful marketing & promotional material.  Knowing the ‘rules’ enables their manipulation in original and innovative ways to generate a positive marketing effect.

Enthusiasm for expression via the written word also led me to studies in screenwriting and travel writing at Gotham Writers’ Workshop in New York and locally at Sydney Writers Centre.

If this sounds like the kind of copywriter your organisation could use, contact me.
